Quick answer: Confirm that you entered the current six-digit IP PIN for the correct person. IND-181-01 applies to the primary taxpayer, IND-183-01 applies to the spouse, and dependent IP PIN errors can produce separate reject codes such as IND-996.
1. You may be using an old IP PIN
The IRS issues a new IP PIN each year. If you are filing during 2026, use the IP PIN issued for 2026—even if the return itself is for an earlier tax year.
2. The PIN may belong to the wrong person
A joint return can require separate IP PINs for the primary taxpayer and spouse. If a dependent or qualifying person has an assigned IP PIN, that person's PIN must also be entered where required.
3. The six-digit number may be entered incorrectly
Check every digit carefully. The IRS states that an incorrect or incomplete IP PIN cannot be validated and the return will reject.
4. Your spouse may need their own IP PIN
For IND-183-01, the IRS says the spouse's SSN has an associated IP PIN and a valid six-digit spouse IP PIN must be entered.
5. A dependent may have an assigned IP PIN
If a dependent or qualifying person has an IRS-issued IP PIN, leaving it out or using the wrong number can cause a separate rejection. The IRS's IND-996 guidance says the dependent or qualifying person's IP PIN must be the valid six-digit number issued for that individual.
6. Your software may be putting the PIN in the wrong field
Make sure the primary taxpayer, spouse and dependent IP PINs are entered in the fields intended for those specific people. Do not substitute one family member's IP PIN for another person's.
What does IND-181-01 mean?
The IRS says IND-181-01 means the IP PIN entered for the primary taxpayer is not valid. Review the primary taxpayer's current six-digit IP PIN and resubmit after correcting it.
What does IND-183-01 mean?
IND-183-01 applies to the spouse. A valid spouse IP PIN was not entered for a spouse whose SSN has an IP PIN requirement.
Should I keep trying different numbers?
No. Do not guess. Retrieve the correct current IP PIN through the IRS and correct the return before retransmitting.

Can an IP PIN help with an AGI rejection?
In some e-file situations, IRS guidance for IND-031-04 and IND-032-04 says a valid IP PIN can be used as an identity-verification option when the correct prior-year AGI or prior-year PIN cannot be provided.
