Which notices allow online verification?

The IRS service page identifies CP5071-series notices and Letter 5447C. The CP5071-family page includes CP5071, 5071C and CP5071F and says to begin online if your notice offers that route. Check the notice number, year and response instructions before signing in.

The CP5447-family page includes CP5447, 5447C and CP5447F. Its alternatives are explained below. Do not choose online verification merely because a refund is delayed or because a different letter mentions identity.

Gather the notice and the right return

Have the original or amended Form 1040-series return for the year on the letter. The IRS service instructions say to check your tax software or ask your preparer if you need a copy. The CP5071 instructions also list an available prior-year return and supporting records such as W-2s, 1099s and Schedules C or F.

Use the route-by-route document checklist. A wage statement is supporting information, not a replacement for the filed return. If the notice describes a return you did not file, be ready to report that fact rather than guessing the return’s answers.

How to complete Verify Your Return

  1. Open the official IRS Verify Your Return page and read its eligibility and preparation instructions.
  2. Select its sign-in or account-creation option. The IRS uses ID.me for account access; follow the IRS account setup guidance if needed.
  3. Return to the IRS verification service and answer its questions about the return. If you created an account, you may need to sign in again to reach this step.
  4. Read the outcome and follow any further IRS instructions. Keep a private record of completion or the follow-up request.

Account access and return verification are separate. Being able to open your IRS account does not, by itself, confirm that you completed the return questionnaire.

What if I cannot verify online?

Follow the alternative instructions on your actual notice. The CP5071 guidance directs readers to the notice’s contact information, and the IRS identity-theft guide says to call the letter’s number if you cannot sign in. Use IRS account help for an ID.me access problem, without treating account troubleshooting as completion of the notice response.

If your letter is 4883C, use its phone-verification route. If it is 5747C, review its in-person route. Do not apply another letter’s instructions to yours. The IRS online service directs people under 18 to contact the IRS rather than create an account.

CP5447, 5447C and CP5447F alternatives

The current CP5447-family instructions say that if you cannot verify online, verification can be by phone, mail or the Document Upload Tool. Follow your notice to determine which alternative and destination apply. Do not send documents to an address, fax number or upload page copied from instructions for another letter.

A document-upload response is an IRS process. RefundIQ’s phone number and website are not substitutes for the IRS destination listed in your notice.

What if I did not file the return?

The online service can be used by eligible notice recipients to tell the IRS that they did not file the return. Do not confirm an unfamiliar return as yours. For the separate filing and identity-theft questions, see someone filed taxes in my name.

After this verification process, the IRS says Form 14039 is unnecessary unless it tells you otherwise. Our Form 14039 guide explains the separate conditions; an online sign-in problem is not a reason to automatically submit an affidavit.

What happens after online verification?

The IRS currently says to wait 2–3 weeks after using the service before checking refund status. Processing may take up to nine weeks after verification. These are not guaranteed completion or deposit dates. Read what happens after identity verification for the distinction between completing verification and receiving a refund.
